Persistence of Light is the story of John Hoyte’s journey from childhood in China, in a Japanese prison camp in World War ll, to leading a British expedition over the Alps with an elephant, to being an entrepreneur and inventor in Silicon Valley. With each surprising twist and turn of his journey, the author builds a life infused with purpose and creativity.

John Hoyte was one of six children of British medical missionaries born in China. While separated from their parents, they were interned by the Japanese for nearly four years. After an engineering degree at Cambridge University and three years in British industry, he traced Hannibal’s route over the Alps with an elephant. He was on the “To Tell the Truth “ show within a week of coming to the States and worked for Hewlett-Packard at the start of Silicon Valley. He founded Spectrex Corporation, based on his uncle’s invention and developed a line of optical instruments for elemental analysis. He and his wife, the poet Luci Shaw, moved to Bellingham nearly twenty years ago and love it here. His hobbies are sailing, camping, pen-and-ink sketching, acrylic landscape painting and playing the acoustic guitar. He has exhibited his art work at both Village Books and the Colophon Café.
